It has been a hot one for sure and my gardens have sure felt it. The perennials are winding down before the Autumn chill sets in and I can't wait for cooler temps! I thought I would share a few pictures that I took this morning around the yard.

These are my front gardens. They are two years old and I am hoping next year they will fill in even better. We had quite the problem with Japanese beetles this year eating everything in sight. We got a few new pieces of yard junque this summer. Those are frogs sitting under the cement umbrella. I couldn't resist when I saw the set at a local antique shop.
It is a hot day today here in Massachusetts with the temps going into the mid 80's and humid. This morning hubby and I started out early to hit an herb and plant sale at the Reverend Keith House in the neighboring town. It is always a nice little sale to benefit the historical society. The house where they have it was built in the 1600's. It is a saltbox farm. The house is open to the public during the sale and they have a tea and sandwich room too. I got a few herbs and perennials at the sale. We had planned to just go to the grocery after that but instead we hit two nice sales. I can't believe we have had such good luck so far this season at the sales. The first one I got a gathering basket, the old copper watering can and the two cloth dolls at. I forgot to get the basket into the picture. The second sale we hit the jackpot with the two large baskets. They are early and in good condition and filthy! The one with the cover has a tag on it put on by the owner. It was so old that it broke in my hand when I touched it. It says Hannah Bates in old handwritten script. Each basket was 10 dollars which I feel was a great price. I also got the covered chicken dish, blue enamelware pot, the old washboard and hubby got a really nice old bottle for his collection. As we were walking away I spotted the noodle board and had to get that too. It is an old one! We spent a total of 40 dollars for the two sales and I think we did good!
Tomorrow is a family barbecue at my sisters to celebrate our birthdays. My birthday is on Monday and hers is on Wednesday. I hope whatever you do this weekend you enjoy it!
Today is a lovely day here in Massachusetts with sunny skies and temps promising to be in the 70's so hubby and I decided to head out to the local sales. We only went to one to fill our antique hunting desire today! It was at a farmhouse and the older man was taking things out of the barn as we drove up. I got this wonderful early child's sleigh in old pumpkin paint complete with cobwebs and remainder of the straw stuffing which would have been under the original leather seat. Price was a whopping 8 dollars! I am going to clean it up later and I am sure the paint will be amazing. I also got the bakers table. I have no idea where I will put it but for 30 dollars I could not pass this beauty up. I am thinking I will give the base and legs a whitewash of paint and leave the scrubbed top as is. I love it! I also bought the little doll crib on super cute wheels and will paint it another color and put some potted plants in it. It reminded me a bit of a goat cart and for 3 dollars who could go wrong? A plant shelf/stand in blue paint and a couple of enamelware and tin pieces rounded out the purchases. As the dealers pulled up they were giving me the evil eye as I walked away with my finds! Kitty loves the sleigh too :)
Our temps are hovering in the high 60's and things are beginning to look a lot like Spring around here. Last week hubby and I were going the back roads to the grocery store and it was trash day in the neighboring town. STOPPPPPPPP! ( that's me) I see something on the side of the road. There it was an old, dirty, very chippy white shelf just laying there with other trash. So he threw it in the back of the Jeep and off we went. Hubby said I should paint it and distress it in another color, but yesterday I asked him to bring it in and see if it would fit where I wanted to put it we decided we liked the old cruddy chippy white for our farmhouse prim kitchen. I cleaned it down and filled it with kitchen needfuls and I love it! Don'tcha love freebies?
I thought I would share my new kitchen laundry vignette with you. I bought the stand and tub to use for an outdoor planter this summer, but until then I decided to put it in my kitchen with a few vintage laundry items I had. The stand the tub is on is old, but the tub is not. I added the antique National Washboard board, two old wooden laundry sticks, and a blue and white enamelware pan. The sign above it for Kirkman's Borax Soap is part of an old box, and the tin item hanging beside it is a soap holder/agitator. I told my kids if the electric bill does not improve "meet your new laundry appliance" they were not amused! I did hang the laundry out yesterday, but it is still chilly here.
Hugs,
I am sharing a couple of new prim pantry labels I made. Just click on them to make full size and download to your computer and print. Not to much else going on here. Little by little I am replacing some winter decor with a few Spring touches. Hubby is working in the bathroom prepping for painting and a whole new look. I will share some pictures of that when it is a bit more attractive ( which isn't NOW) lol Blessings and enjoy!
It is a gloomy day here, snowed a bit, but it didn't stick to the ground. I am so ready for Spring! I was fooling around in my Paint Shop Pro program which I haven't done for a few years and decided to use some of my graphics I had to make some prim pantry labels. I figured I would share them with you. You can put these on jars, cans, boxes, what have you. If you would like to download them, just click on the label which will bring it to full size hopefully and then right click and save to your computer to print out. I print them out on brown craft paper or even a brown paper bag. Enjoy!
Hi everyone, I need some opinions on this item. My mother in law acquired this item probably in the 70's ( not sure where) but hubby remembers her throwing a quilt over it. It is narrow on the top though and not really a quilt rack I don't think. I think it is a handmade walker for an elderly person as the middle piece is very smooth as if worn by hands holding it for a long time. The bottom of the legs are rounded and smooth too. It is barely wide enough though for two hands to hold, but it is too tall for a baby walker. I am not sure what to do with it or how to display it, but it is unique and I like it. Any ideas on what it is and how you would use it in your homes? It has been in the attic for a long time and it's a shame because it's a neat piece of hand made folk art I feel.

Happy Friday! Today was rather a gloomy day. The temps were in the 50's, but the rain was coming down in buckets. It was the perfect day for laying on the couch with a few of my favorite prim reads. I know most of you are probably familiar with these magazines! From left to right- " A Primitive Place, Mercantile Gatherings, A Simple Life and Passion for Primitives. I love them all for different reasons. All are filled with great room ideas and plenty of prim eye candy, plus great stories! I just started my subscription to " A Simple Life" and I love it so much that I am trying to acquire all the back issues. I have had some luck on Ebay and only need 3 more to have them all!

Passion for Primitives is a great coffee table book and is filled to the brim with gorgeous pictures. I am taking my time going through the book because I don't want it to end! I know some of you have noticed my wallpaper that is in the kitchen. I gripe about it all the time and how we are going to paint in here soon. I know my mother in law loved it when she put it up back in the uh...errrr.....70's? Can you believe it? It still actually looks good if you like wallpaper. But I digress... In the Passion for primitives book, there is a picture of a beautiful prim bedroom with the same wallpaper. It looks blueish in the picture and my camera lighting, but it is the same paper. I suddenly am liking it a bit better, ( hey it's good enough for a beautiful book) but yeah- it's going bye bye and soon! So, if by any chance you have not had the opportunity to enjoy these magazines and book, I recommend them highly! Have a great weekend!

There is a pot of chili simmering on the stove, the coffee is on and snow has finally made its appearance in our neck of the woods. We got about 8 inches total from 2 separate snowfalls the past few days. It does look pretty out my back window for sure!
I don't do a lot of Valentines Day decorating, but I did add a few prim hearts to the trencher on the kitchen table. Today is computer/sewing room closet cleaning day. I have put off doing this for many months and it is BAD. One thing about living in an older home is the closets, or lack of them. This one is narrow and deep, with 3 shelves at the very back. I am not even sure what is on those shelves because they are behind everything else. Maybe there could be treasures! ( I doubt it) The floor of the closet is covered and deep with candle making supplies, craft material, and heaven only knows what else, so that is the project today. I want to make a batch of candles this week. Have a great Sunday!
Hi everyone, I have been doing a bit of tweaking of displays this week. After the holidays the house just seemed so blah. I wanted to go with some simple prim displays for the rest of the winter months. This is what I did on the kitchen bay window. I filled the old dough box with an old trencher, wooden rolling pins and paddles and filled it with some stoneware crocks and a stoneware milk pan. I added some berries and assorted drieds to one of the crocks and put a few paddles in there amongst them. I kept my shorebird out, ( he always stays on the window because I adore him). A few crocheted snowflakes on the windows round it out. The weather has been about the same...no real snow just rain today and a lot of mud. The animals have been in and out and the floor needs a good mopping, all I see is muddy paw prints, but that will have to wait till tomorrow.

This was the backyard last year at this time! We had over a foot of snow on the ground and icy temperatures. This year we have had not more than a stray flurry since a weird storm in October and it is already January. The temperatures have been for the most part in the 40's and 50's. I keep thinking we are in for a biggie soon, but it just doesn't seem to be in our future ( for the next week anyway). I guess I should be grateful, but I do love seeing the snow on the ground. I love sitting at the kitchen table and looking out across the river and seeing the Canadian geese with a snowy backdrop. I love the bright red of the cardinals against the pure white getting their seeds from the feeders. Hubby and I are thinking about taking a ride out to a an antique/prim shop we have never been to before this weekend. It's about an hour drive, but since the weather is so favorable, I figure we might as well do it while we can. I hope you have a great weekend!
Hugs,
I am not a big resolution maker, but this year I do have a few. Like a lot of you I want to declutter. Our living space is pretty good, but the basement and garage looks like we are hoarders! It has been hard because my mother in law passed away last May and we have all her things in these 2 areas. My husband is not quite ready to think about selling or even giving away her things, so here they stay. We need to organize the stuff though, as it is a jumbled up mess. He said we will take a small area at a time and go through it all. It is just getting around to him wanting to do it. One of my main resolutions for this year is to try to cut back on my grocery bill. There has to be a way! Couponing is not my thing. I have tried it some, but it seems like the coupons are always for things I don't usually buy so buying something for the sake of that is not a help. I have 3 adult children that live here, and they eat a lot. My husband is also retired and eats all day long. lol . You would be horrified to know what I spend per week on food. My resolution is to begin to plan meals for the week on Sunday, go shopping once a week instead of daily, and try to get this grocery budget under control. It will take some getting used to for us, but it has to be done. What are your resolutions?

Happy New Year!

Nadine
PrimHeartedhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10956580443669072587noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1202144276833580675.post-62603235045010348542011-12-18T06:33:00.000-08:002011-12-18T06:33:09.464-08:00Countdown to Christmas!
I can't believe that Christmas is only a week away. I haven't wrapped a single gift! I said to hubby today, "We are staying home and getting things done." One reason I have procrastinated on putting gifts under the tree is a new addition to our family named Vader. My son's kitten! He is a cute little all black kitten, and frisky as heck. I would like to share a few pictures of some of my primitive farmhouse decor this year. I have kept it pretty simple with touches of greenery and some simple vignettes. The bay window is the exception in the kitchen and is decked out with a tree and village. My children no matter how old love the Christmas village. These pictures are in my kitchen. I will share some more of the rest of the house tomorrow. Thanks for stopping by and Happy Holidays! You can click on the pictures to enlarge them.

The kitchen table display is an old painted tool carrier that I usually keep on the table and change the contents with the holidays. This year I filled old Mason Jars with treats for Santa and surrounded them with greenery.
Many Prim Goodies!Wow, what a morning hubby and I had at the sales. There weren't many but we decided to hit 2 places. The first was a craft fair in a local neighborhood. They had some lovely crafts and I picked up a few gifts, but they also had a section called "Nana's Attic" which held all the yard sale type goodies. I got the prim snowman bowl, the stocking, the repro coverlet, the hooked chair pads, some nice pocketbooks ( Vera Bradley and 9 west, plus some great hard cover books on quilts, cooking and the like. Everything was 50 cents each. I wish I had gotten there earlier. Next we stopped at a sale that was in an old barn. We got a ton of stuff there. The man said everything had to go and to make a pile of what we wanted and he would give us a lump sum price. I was a bit nervous, but it seemed like he was a reasonable fellow so yeah, it was 10 dollars for all! Hubby got an old scythe for the yard ( not in the picture because of it's size) an old yoke, the early footstool, a gourd dipper, the corn dryer, the old birdhouse in great old blue paint, the brown crock, an old buoy in old chipped paint ( which I collect) the yelloware and green pitcher, a few old barrel spigots and a great Early peg rack in a reddish brown old paint! I know it is kind of hard to see it all in my pictures, but it was a great haul, and for 10 dollars! We have had a lot of luck at the sales lately. The antique market is slow for dealers I think because of the economy so they are selling dirt cheap. I have a few more things to show you from previous weeks. Now to find places for it all !
Prim Blessings,
Here we are at the end of October already and I haven't shared my outdoor signs of Fall. This old wheelbarrow was my husband's grandfathers. Don't you just love the old red paint and original stenciling on the side? We have had more people stop and want to buy that wheelbarrow from us, but we would never sell it. It belongs here. Unfortunately we have to keep it chained to a tree. We have already had someone steal the pumpkins from the display. I am hoping it was just kids.
Our weather is still stuck in summer mode thus far here in Massachusetts with lots of humidity. I am hopeful that it will soon break and I can feel the fresh crisp air. I have kept my fall decor fairly simple this year. I am going for a less cluttered primitive feel to most of my displays and decor. Here are a few picture from my kitchen. I did the bay window with a great large prim birdhouse that we got a local primitives shop in Rochester MA called The Gingham Goose. If you ever are over that way, be sure to pay the shop a visit and be prepared to want everything in there! It is topped off with a vine and the old crow sits on top. The little pumpkin sits atop the old candle boxes.
I bought the old tool carrier for 5 dollars at a yard sale a few weeks ago and gave it a coat of black paint and some distressing. I think it makes for a nice simple kitchen table top display with the gourds, indian corn and the storage jars.
I know others are having it worse than we are, so I will be grateful for our 90 degrees! Before you know it the leaves will be changing and the snow will be flying so I will savor each day for what it brings to us. I have a few new finds that I have turned into primitive yard decor so I thought I would share them with you. Best of all they were found items in our garage! The door and grape crusher were found up in the rafters and have been there according to hubby for a LONG time. He said he remembers asking his Mom what the crusher was when he was a little boy and he is ummm......58 so yeah it's old. haha. It has some great old green paint on the base and traces on the wheel! I put a plant in the bin and it is decorating the front of the house now along with a lot of other items. The door was the origninal door to the old outhouse on the property. When he pulled it down it was covered with mud wasp dirt... I ran like heck. lol But, I cleaned all that filth off it and I just LOVE the patina of it. The old green over the cream color paint is perfect in my eyes. I hung a twig wreath and the metal sconce holder which came with 3 glass vases in it and I replaced with the old clay pots. That was a yard sale bargain this past weekend for a dollar. I figure I can change the wreath and decor on the door with the seasons. We put the door leaning up against the side of the house where the driveway is. It was always a blah plain spot, so now it has a bit of charm. So, if you like this look don't overlook those old doors!
(busy busy busy) A few months ago I had blogged about my husband coming home with a neat cupboard top he found on the curb for free. It looked like a man had used it as a tool cabinet as it had the holes in the shelf for brushes etc. First I took those old shelves out and hubby put a new shelf in for me. I had this circa 1990's colonial style cabinet that was in a high gloss pine finish with a painting of flowers on the doors. It was pretty and all, but screamed " I need to be primmed up" I meant to take a picture but I was so excited to finish this that I forgot. lol So I painted both pieces in Valspars Dark Kettle Black (flat finish) after sanding them down. I then resanded to distress and gave it a rub down with Minwax special walnut stain. I let it sit for a few minutes then wiped the stain off with an old soft cloth. I put the found cupboard top on top of the cabinet bottom I had and came up with the "step back" style cupboard look. I think it came out very well and looks nice with the old crock bottles, tole tray and pewter pieces. I am sure I will be fooling with vignettes for it for a while :) I hope everyone had a nice 4th of July and the summer is going well so far!
Here are two pictures of the completed cupboard followed by the picture of the cupboard top before it was made over in case you missed that blog post from a few months ago.
Yesterday was a beautiful day for Fathers Day and hubby and I added a few new plantings around the house. We plan to edge the gardens in old bricks we have, but I thought I would share the pretty flowers we planted for now. They are already attracting butterflies which is what I wanted. I hope everyone had a great Dad's day weekend!
I love picnics! There is nothing better than to spread out the blanket and relax and enjoy some summertime good eats. I decorated my bay window with this old picnic basket filled with an array of prim goodies, mason jars filled with canned summer fruits, ginger beer bottles for a refreshing beverage, lemons and limes, and an old civil war song book to read. I hope this weekend is a relaxing one for everyone and maybe you can find time to even have a picnic.PrimHeartedhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10956580443669072587noreply@blogger.com4
