Hi everyone, I need some opinions on this item. My mother in law acquired this item probably in the 70's ( not sure where) but hubby remembers her throwing a quilt over it. It is narrow on the top though and not really a quilt rack I don't think. I think it is a handmade walker for an elderly person as the middle piece is very smooth as if worn by hands holding it for a long time. The bottom of the legs are rounded and smooth too. It is barely wide enough though for two hands to hold, but it is too tall for a baby walker. I am not sure what to do with it or how to display it, but it is unique and I like it. Any ideas on what it is and how you would use it in your homes? It has been in the attic for a long time and it's a shame because it's a neat piece of hand made folk art I feel.

I don't know what it is, but I do like it, it would look great with some kind of quilt or handwork on it.
ReplyDeleteI can only guess but I tell you this---if you want to see it up close or just want to find a home for it, you can always send to me. I would find a warm and welcoming place for it and I would show it great respect and love for all my days!
ReplyDeleteNadine I have no idea what it is but I love it!
ReplyDeleteWhat a treasure!
I mailed your package yesterday!

Hi, Nadine,
ReplyDeleteThe only thing I can think of is that it was originally part of a pair, used to hold something like a table. But then it wouldn't be so smooth....

Very cool piece. I'm into horses...and wonder if perhaps this was used in a barn to hold a child-size pony saddle? I like it. =)

DeleteNadine~ it is beautiful~ I am not sure what it is but Beth could be correct does look like a small saddle holder~
ReplyDeleteideas for decorating~ You could drape a homespun small table top/coverlet over one side to show off the top because the top is beautiful wood~ could even hang some drieds from it~ sweet annie, hydrangea, gourd egg strands,
or just by it self in a little corner, by a door entrance~
Let us know how you display the beauty

The wood is absolutely beautiful. Draping a quilt over it would look nice but it would cover it all up. Hum..... Can't wait to see what you do with it. -Steph-
ReplyDeleteThanks for all the ideas on what it is and how I could use it ladies! Hubby insists it is an invalid walker, but I don't know, the saddle holder sounds like a good idea too. lol I put it in the bedroom for now. Some mornings maybe I could use it as a walker- The old bones are aching :) I will take a picture when I get it set up with something.
ReplyDeletehugs,
Nadine
I don't know what it is but I too think Beth is right. And the idea from Teresa is good, along with drieds you could also hang candles from it.
ReplyDeleteIf you have any candle molds you could have them on a mantle and have this below with the candles draped over it, I have a few pairs where they are still on the wick together and I never have a place to put them except on a nail. This would be great to have for lots
of things. It's always nice that you have something from a family member.

Susan
I have no idea Nadine but it is a neat piece and yes, get that baby outta the attic! It reminds me of a mini ladder so I think it would look great with a quilt or textile of some sort thrown over it. Because it is such a neat piece, no matter what you do with it, it'll look great!
ReplyDeleteI saw similar items in larger size in a barn. It had a saddle on it so I think the ladies are right. Nice piece!
ReplyDeleteNadine,
ReplyDeleteI am a new follower.
I have a similar contraption (mine looks like a mini sawhorse with limb legs) and I use it to hold some broken flax and a flax break or batten near my spinning wheel. I have seen them longer than mine but that is what I thought of when I first saw yours. Very unique.
